The United States national anthem, once a bold hymn to liberty, has withered into a dirge, reflecting a nation that has traded democracy and reason for spectacle and hollow slogans.

It’s so very sad what has happened to our country. I’m old enough to remember when it was a beacon to the world. But alas, greed, corruption and cruelty have taken over. Along with climate change, this will not end well for any of us.

Due to our age, I think we have an enlightened perspective on how things are crashing down throughout the United States. I’m somewhat surprised that people who are below the age of 50 are not more angry and resistant to many of the decisions made in Washington. Younger people are going to be stuck with the consequences of higher debt, tariffs, restricted credit and higher interest rates for the foreseeable future. There were some regrettable actions taken by the 1960s/70s generation of young people, but they were also instrumental in promoting civil rights, women’s rights and ending an unpopular war. I’m very discouraged that there has not been more visible and loud opposition to some of the crazy politics and actions from Washington.
